Richard J. Turrentine, 87, formerly of Plano, TX, passed away Jan. 20, 2011, in Houston.
He was born Aug. 31, 1923, in Hopkins County, TX to Richard Joshua and Stella Ruthie (Sparks) Turrentine, and was reared in Commerce.During World War II he entered the U.S. Army, serving in the 101st Airborne Division in the Pacific Theater. After WWII, he attended East Texas State Teacher’s College.
During the Korean Conflict, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps, serving at the El Toro base in Calif.
Upon discharge, he and Donna settled in Sherman, and Richard worked in the wholesale grocery business. In 1969 he became cemetery manager of Ridgeview Memorial Park until his retirement.
Richard was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Plano, the 101st Airborne National Association, the Gardeners of America Club, and past president of the Plano Host Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Turrentine of Houston; sons Steve Turrentine and wife, Eileen of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Rick Turrentine and wife, Julie of Houston; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Billy Frank Turrentine and C. Audie Turrentine; and sisters, Mozelle Kemendo and Faye Dugdale.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen. Entombment will follow at Ridgeview Memorial Park. The family received friends at a visitation beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
